Wrestlers fare well

The Staples Motley wrestling team beat Winona 38-24, then lost to two tough teams, 43-22 to West Central Area and 42-31 to St. Cloud Tech, at a quad meet on Jan. 2.
“We were about where we thought we would be, were we need to be,” said Coach Dave Anglin. “We got a good look at WCA.”
WCA is the highest ranked team in the Section 6A, so the Cardinals could see them in the postseason. Staples wrestlers won six of the match ups but they didn’t get a pin until the heavyweight match.
One of the highlights of the day was Blayne Dumpprope defeating one of the WCA ranked wrestlers. “That was a good one, he gutted it out,” said Anglin. “From now on he will have that ‘I can do this’ attitude.”
Owen Bjerga earned three wins in the three duals. “He picked it up, we will be counting on him,” said Anglin.
Kyle Serich earned three pins at heavyweight in the three matches. “He wrestled really well, he is starting to come into his own,” said Anglin.
Jasiah Paskewitz got his first varsity action of the year. Although he didn’t win, Anglin said Paskewitz “wrestled tough, he frustrated some really good wrestlers.”
Although the team looked good, the meet could be costly because two of the varsity wrestlers will be out for a few weeks with hand injuries. “It will be interesting wrestling short a few people,” said Anglin. “The bar just rose and the kids will have to rise up and match it.”
