Tennis team playing in section finals

The Staples-Motley girls tennis team advanced to the Section 8A finals where they faced off against Roseau in the match to go to state. That match was played after this issue of the Staples World went to print.

The Cardinals won their opening round against Wadena-Deer Creek 7-0 and got past Crookston 6-1 in the second round.

The individual section tournament is being played Oct. 12 and 13.

Before the section tournament, the Cardinals won against Minnewaska 6-1 on Oct. 6, but the matches were much closer than the final score indicated. The teams battled back and forth, playing four set tiebreakers and three super tiebreakers to 10 points after the teams split the first two sets. Of those seven tiebreakers, the Cardinals won six, providing the margin needed for victory.
