Smith’s home run starts Cardinal comeback
The Staples Motley baseball team nearly erased a 7-2 deficit against Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale on May 21, but the rally fell short by one and lost 7-6.
“We gave them too many opportunities right away,” said Coach Mitch Anderson as the Cardinals fell behind 5-0 after three innings.
Brady Smith started the comeback with a two run homer, but B-H/V got those two runs right back.
Blake Gerard came in to relieve starting pitcher Reid Busker, who Anderson said pitched great up to that point. Gerard finished the game with two scoreless innings giving the team a chance.
In the sixth inning, the Cardinals scored four runs but could’ve had more. “We had plenty of opportunities but could’nt capitalize,” said Anderson.
Smith also had two walks and scored twice in the game.
