Defense leads to offense in two wins

The Staples-Motley boys basketball team used pressure defense and good shooting to win two games, 76-44 against Pillager on Jan. 17 and they hit the century mark in beating Frazee 100-59 on Jan. 19.
The team improved to 7-6 with the wins.
Against Pillager, it was a tight game for the first few minutes. Pillager took a 18-17 lead on a three point shot, but Gavin Smith, Jack Fietek and Josh Lombard all scored baskets to put the Cardinals up 25-20 and they never lost the lead again.
Smith led the Cardinals in each game, scoring 21 against Pillager and 30 against Frazee. Trey Skeesick also scored in double figures in each game, with 17 and 15. Hunter Carlson was on track against Frazee, scoring 20 points.
