5K Hero Run winner
Twelve-year-old Kira Sweeney, a seventh grader at Motley Staples Middle School, was the top runner in the entire women’s division, not just for her age group, at the 5K Hero Run May 21, in Fargo. Over 8,000 runners participated in the event’s first year to honor law enforcement, veterans and emergency services personnel. Sweeney’s goal was to beat 20 minutes and she came in at 19:58, a full minute ahead of the next runner. Sweeney is a runner on both the Cardinal varsity cross country team and the track and field team. She is the daughter of Jerred and Tiffany Sweeney, Staples.
