Richard Allen
The funeral service for Richard “Dick” Allen of rural Staples, was held Friday, June 27, 2025, at the Domian-Anderson Chapel in Bertha.
On Sunday, June 22, 2025, Richard passed away with family by his side at the Williams Living Center in Parkers Prairie, with attentive care by the staff and Hospice of Douglas County.
Richard, “Dick”, was born to Evan and Ada (Kilmer) Allen on August 4, 1934, in Montezuma, IA. He attended grade school in Iowa and South Dakota with high school years at Eagle Bend and he graduated from Staples High School. He continued his education and attained a Graphic Arts degree at Staples Vocational School. In March 1955, Richard entered the US Army and served as a Private 1st Class until his honorable discharge at Ft. Bragg, NC in 1957.
Richard married Leila Minnie Irish on August 3, 1957, in Staples. They resided in several places eventually calling Staples home for the last 50-plus years. Richard was an avid fisherman and hunter who took pride in teaching firearms safety classes. He had a passion for farming and other hobbies included playing cards, dancing,and trips to the casino.
Preceding Richard in death were his wife, Leila (2022); parents, Evan and Ada; infant daughter, Pamela; siblings Eva Heller, Helen Riggs and Elsie Riggs.
Remembering Richard will be his children: Richard “Rick” Allen of Staples, Terri (Jim) Trantina of Browerville, Sherry (Dennis) Booth of Elk River, John (Kelsey) Allen of Staples, Lloyd (Loree) Allen of Browerville and Dale (Jennifer) Allen of Staples; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Charlotte Guse; along with extended family, friends and neighbors.
Military honors were presented by MNAGHG and the Elmer Goche Post 3922, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Wadena.
Burial was in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Staples.
