Cardinals bounce back from tough loss
The Staples-Motley volleyball team lost a five set thriller at Park Rapids on Oct. 7, then came back home for an efficient win against Pelican Rapids on Oct. 9
The Park Rapids match couldn’t have been much closer. The Cardinals won the first and third set, but dropped the second and fourth. In the deciding set, it was still close but Staples-Motley ended up falling 15-13.
Against Pelican Rapids, the Cardinals worked hard to get early leads in each set, then maintained the small lead until the end.
Pam Lawrence created the lead in the first set with an ace serve and three more hard serves that Pelican Rapids had trouble with. Annie Schlosser cleaned up with two kills to keep the lead. In the second set, Schlosser was blocking, hitting and setting to get the early lead. Izzy Becker had two aces and played excellent back-row defense with excellent passes to the setters. Kyleena Rudlang had a kill to get the team to 24 points and they won the set two points later. In the third set, Clara Maros had an ace serve to get the lead at 15-14, then had a kill later in the set to go up 21-18. Abby Brichacek had an ace block to add to the win.
