Staples police report

Recent reports received by the Staples Police include:

Aug. 15; Staples Police attempted to locate a fleeing suspect on an ATV.  Also responding was the Todd County Sheriff’s Dept, Wadena County Sheriff’s Dept and Motley Police Dept. Officers set up a perimeter near the intersection of 470th St and Starlight Rd. The suspect who fled was not located after fleeing into a large wooded area. The incident is still under investigation.

Aug. 16; Staples Police responded to a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Hwy 10 and 14th St NE. A vehicle driven by Richard Wentworth of Staples attempted to cross Hwy 10 and struck a vehicle driven by Kyle Johnson of Henning broadside. No injuries were reported. There was major damage done to both vehicles.

Aug. 17; Staples Police received a report that a slide on the Sacred Heart School playground, on the 400 block of 4th St NE, had been damaged.

Aug. 17; Staples Police responded to Lakewood Health Systems Hospital for a domestic assault. After investigating the incident police arrested Marina Ivanchenko, 45, of Duluth, for domestic assault.

Aug. 19; Staples Police took a report of a theft of a motor vehicle from the 1400 block of 8th St. NE. Upon investigation, police arrested Richard Boatman Sr., 50, of Staples and transported him to the Wadena County Jail.

Aug. 19; Staples Police took a report of a missing adult. The man was later located on the Crow Wing River.

Aug. 20; Staples Police located vandalism done to the rock in Odden’s Park.

Aug. 21; Staples Police responded to the 1400 block of 3rd St NE for a domestic dispute. Kevin  Barthel, 48, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

Aug. 22; at 1:41 a.m., Staples Police located three individuals spray painting a large rock in Odden’s Park. Police cited all three individuals for damage to property.

Aug. 22; Staples Police received a call of an individual lying on the sidewalk next to Dollar General. Police located and identified the individual who said he was trying to hitchhike to California. Police spoke to the individual and advised him on the complaint. 

Aug. 23; Staples Police, along with the fire department responded to the 400 block of 8th St NE for a report of smoke coming from a house. Police arrived and did not locate any smoke in the area. An area of heavy smoke was then found in the 800 block of 2nd Ave NE. Police arrived and found a resident burning multiple prohibited materials. The fire department put out the fire and police cited the individual for burning prohibited materials.

Aug. 22; around 11:30 p.m., Staples Police observed a chair propped against a wall, on top of a cooler, on the west side of the high school.  Police, along with a school employee searched the roof of the high school, but did not locate anyone. This incident is under investigation.

Aug. 23; Staples Police responded to Lakewood Health Systems for a report of a strange acting individual and refusing to leave. Police learned that the subject, Jeffrey Herner, 27, had a warrant out of Todd County for worthless checks. Police arrived and arrested Herner for the warrant and also charged him with fifth degree possession of methamphetamine, possession of hypodermic needles, fourth degree damage to property and theft. Herner was transported to the Todd County Jail.

Aug. 25; Staples Police responded to Lefty’s Bar for a report of a theft of a purse. A male suspect on a darker colored BMX bicycle had stolen a purse from outside the bar and had left on the bicycle. The purse contained cash, miscellaneous items, a cell phone, and also a cell phone from another victim. Police were unable to locate the suspect. This incident is under investigation.

Aug. 26; Staples Police received a call of someone shooting bottle rockets in front of cars. Officers responded and identified the individual shooting the bottle rockets. The person was verbally warned not to do it again.

Aug. 27; Staples Police responded to the 800 block of Hwy 10 for a report of threats. After investigation Police arrested Anthony Guenther, 27, of Staples and charged him with fifth degree assault and disorderly conduct.

Aug. 28; Staples Police stopped to speak to an individual who was acting suspicious on the 500 block of 2nd Ave NE. After investigation, Chad Richer, 30, was arrested for second degree sale of a controlled substance, third degree possession of a controlled substance, fifth degree possession of a controlled substance and possession of burglary tools. Kathleen Olson, 29, was also arrested for fifth degree possession of a controlled substance. Both individuals were transported to the Todd County Jail.
