CAD discusses ideas for building a coalition
The Staples Citizens Against Drugs (CAD) held a meeting on Sept. 27 to discuss ideas on building a coalition in Staples and what that coalition could do.
Todd County Citizens Against Drugs has a five year grant from 2015 to 2020, which is dependent on local coalitions doing the work.
Examples of what some coalitions have done in other communities include; working on establishing social host ordinances, holding community events and increasing community awareness.
Todd County has a social host ordinance, but the City of Staples does not. The Social Host Ordinance holds parents responsible if they allow underage drinking to occur.
CAD helped with the planning and with coordinating the methamphetmine forum “Not On My Block,” held in Staples, last March. They are now helping with the Community Connect Resource Fair on Oct. 26 ,in Staples.
At the Sept. 27 meeting, Teresa Sorenson said the workgroup is handing out conversation cards hoping to get people talking about drug and alcohol issues. They also discussed doing awareness programs for parents at sports meetings or school conferences.
