Ladwig honored to be commander for Motley American Legion Post

Navy veteran Tom Ladwig is a proud member of the Motley American Legion Post #124 and has served as its commander since April of 2015.

He was first inspired to join the military by his grandfather Thomas Edward Rath, of whom he is named. “Grandpa served in the navy during WWI,” Ladwig shared recently. “He joined when he was 14 years old.”

A native of Pelican Lake, Wisc., Ladwig attended vocational college for one year after high school (he had intended to be a gunsmith); but decided instead to follow in the footsteps of his Grandpa Rath. “I was in the navy from 1984 - 1988. I was 20 years old when I joined,” Ladwig said.

In addition for the opportunity to serve his country, Ladwig said he joined the navy for economic reasons and, “to see the world.”

Ladwig joined the military during the time of the Libyan Conflict. Twice, he was stationed at Adak, Alaska, part of Operation Valiant Usher.

He enjoys sharing stories with other veterans during the American Legion’s monthly meetings. “This is a good group to be a part of,” Ladwig said. “They have a lot to share and I enjoy listening to their stories of how they have served their country.”

He’s humbled to serve as the post’s commander, Ladwig went on. “They drafted me about six months after I joined...I enjoy it.”

Ladwig works in Little Falls as the Director of Operations for a petroleum distribution center.  He has lived in Motley for 11 years and is married to Motley native  Shelly (Swecker). Together they have three children and six grandchildren. “That’s another reason I joined the American Legion...I hope to share with my kids and grandkids what it means to be a veteran. I think it helps instill respect.”

The Tri-County American Legion Post #124 meets the third Thursday of every month at Motley City Hall, at 7 p.m. “Any veteran is welcome to join us,” Ladwig said.

In addition to the monthly meetings, the American Legion members participate at a variety of services, parades, programs; and burials of veterans. “We still have a color guard here,” Ladwig noted. They are also actively involved in fundraising and provide annual scholarships to area students.

The Motley American Legion is a very supportive group, Ladwig said. He’s glad he joined and hopes other area veterans will consider doing the same, no matter their age or branch. “As the saying goes, ‘We all gave some and some gave all,’” Ladwig said.
