Herbert Garland

Herbert “Herb” Lloyd Garland, 87 of Litchfield,  passed into the presence of His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on January 8, 2024.

Friends and family are invited to join for a visitation with the family on Saturday, January 20, at 1:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Church, 205 County Road 34, Litchfield, MN 55355. A Celebration of Life will begin at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow at the church.

Herb was born June 22, 1936 to Orval and Ethel (Miller) Garland in Bertha. Herb attended and graduated from Staples High School in 1954. While in high school, he was active in sports and was nicknamed “reverend” because of his lifestyle. He was selected to the National Honor Society and chosen to be mayor of the city for a day. After graduating from high school, he enrolled in St. Paul Bible College (SPBC), now Crown College. While at SPBC, he was also involved in sports and was chosen as the first MVP of the basketball team. Herb graduated from SPBC with a Bachelor of Science in Missions. While at SPBC, he met Kathryn “Kathy” Kendall of Omaha, NE. They were married on August 3, 1957. Herb and Kathy both felt God’s call on their life to serve as missionaries. After graduating from college, to prepare further for their overseas ministry, they ministered two years with the Beefhide Gospel Mission in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky. In 1960 The Christian and Missionary Alliance sent them to Costa Rica for Spanish language studies.

Jesus said, “I am the Way (road, path) and the Truth and the Life.” Having received Jesus as his Savior and Lord, Herb was in/on The Path, with the promise “I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.” Herb never deviated from that Pathway. With Jesus as His companion, He sowed the seed of Truth in the hearts of people in the mountains and jungle villages of Colombia, South America for 20 years and in the cities of Venezuela, S.A. for 20 years. Life, eternal Life, the gift of God, was received by hundreds. Many young people following in his steps found their Pathway as pastors and teachers of God’s Truth. The Garlands served their Lord for 43 years and retired in 2001 from the mission field.

Herb was so proud of his and Kathy’s five sons, the joy and love of his heart. Jeff (Lorie) Garland of Litchfield, Scott (Kim) of Kirkwood, MO, Dan (Sue) of White Bear Lake, Ben (Jackie) of Waukesha, WI and Dave (Tracy) of Sidney, MT. They have 17 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Herb is survived by three brothers Ray, Larry (Joyce) and Bill.

He was proceeded in death by his father and mother, Orval and Ethel (Miller) Garland; father-in-law, Don Kendall and mother-in-law, Fern (Darland) Kendall; sister, Janet (Garland) Grondahl; brother-in-law, Cloyce Grondahl; sisters-in-law Helen (Amundson) Garland and Sharon (Ford) Garland and grandson-in-law, Jake Johnson.

A very meaningful verse in their retirement years has been “Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way.” Deut. 8:2.
