Former Staples World reporter
Muriel (Guth) Burgess, 1936 Staples High School graduate, stopped by the Staples World recently to look at the newspaper archives. She was a contributing reporter during the summer following her senior year; and Muriel was able to find a few of her stories written during that time. Muriel, 92, now lives in San Diego, Calif. When she left Staples, Muriel went on to study interior design at the University of Minnesota and worked for 50 years at the University of California, Northridge. Her first husband, Ray Hagan, was a Big Band drummer who worked with Frank Sinatra. She was disappointed to miss the All-School reunion last weekend, but Muriel (traveling with her sister, Marilyn (Guth) Johnson and other relatives from the Twin Cities area)
was happy to connect with some friends
in this area and see some familiar sites. “I couldn’t come to Minnesota and not
visit Staples,” Muriel said, adding that she grew up on 3rd Street, one block north of the high school. Her parents were Louis (a railroad worker) and Kathryn Guth. (Staples World photo by Dawn Timbs)
