Eight file for Motley City offices

Three incumbents and five other names will be on the Nov. 2 ballot for Motley City offices (mayor and three city council positions) that are up for re-election.

o Joining incumbent Konrad Alexander in the race for mayor (a two-year position) are Nancy Nieken and Duane Solga, both of whom presently serve on the Motley City Council.

Alexander has served the City of Motley as mayor since Jan. 2007. Nieken has been a council member for the past eight years; and Solga has served two years of his four-year term.

o Three people will be vying for the two (2) - four (4) year terms for council that are up for re-election, seats currently held by Sampson and Nieken.

Incumbent Rob Sampson has filed for office; as have Steve Johnson and Keith Jares.

Sampson has been on the council since Jan. 2007; and Johnson previously served on the council from 2007 - 2009.

o Two people have filed for the one (1) - two (2) year term for council, to fulfill the last two years of the position vacated by Rena Underhill’s resignation. They are incumbent Bruce Mills (a council member since 2003) and Bob Jenkins.

City Clerk/Treasurer Terri Smith explained that when there are more than two years left when a council person resigns (as was the case with Underhill), the council appoints someone to fill the term until the next election.

Concerning Underhill’s case, the council appointed Mills to serve the remainder of the first two years. The upcoming election will determine who will serve the final two years of the seat vacated by Underhill.

A detailed profile of each candidate will be provided in a future edition of the Staples World.
