New events Sunday at the depot for Railroad Days

Stories needed for railroad/depot history play

The Staples Historical Society is presenting new events Sunday, Aug. 29, during Railroad Days. All events will take place at the Historic Northern Pacific Railroad Depot.

A play is being written based on oral histories of real people who have worked for the railroad in the Staples area or have stories about the railroad and depot. The play will include vignettes and songs.

“We still need people willing to share their stories and youth ages 8-18 to be involved in doing the play,” said Amy Hunter, coordinator of the project and member of the Staples Historical Society.

Playwright Nelsen Inz and music composer Charlie Maguire have been hired to work with the youth to prepare the play. There is no cost to the youth to participate.

Two performances are planned for noon and 2 p.m. at the depot. The project is made possible by a grant from the Five Wings Arts Council.

Volunteers willing to share their stories and youth interested in performing are asked to contact Hunter at 218-894-1925.

The historical society will start Sunday with a Belgian Waffle Breakfast from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Included in the breakfast will be “all you care to eat” fresh waffles with, sausage, milk and coffee.

“We need to guarantee 300 plates to Dad’s Belgian Waffles, who will be preparing the waffles so we really need your attendance and support of the event,” Hunter said.

Staples Historical Society displays will be available for viewing at the depot Sunday, Aug. 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
