Box plant coming down

The Woodland Container building, located on the west end of Staples along Highway 10, is in the process of being torn down. Below, crews from Derrick’s Construction of Savage had started the project last week. Above, walls of the kiln area of the plant had been removed. Commonly called “The Box Factory,” the building has been a fixture for 60 years. It was built in 1947 and operated for years as the Berger Patent Lumber

Factory. From the mid 1980s to the late 1990s (when the plant closed), it was

the home of Woodland Container Corporation. The building was vacant when the structure suffered severe damage in a 2000 tornado. The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, which has owned the land, is having the building torn down. (Staples World photos by Dawn Timbs and Tom Crawford )
