Staples VFW opens with 3-1 record after two DH

The local Staples Motley VFW baseball team is 3-1 after playing their first two double header contests last week.
The Staples Motley VFW squad started off its
summer season the right way June 22, extracting two wins from the Pequot Lakes VFW.
Coach John Riewer’s team won their first game 5-4 and later took a second gamed 7-0.
The local VFW had six hits but made five errors on the way to the win. Blake Petrich pitched all seven innings, giving up four hits, four runs but just one earned run to Pequot. He struck out eight Pequot batters and walked four.
Tyler O’Brien, Alek Paskewitz and Eric Hybl each smacked a double and each got a run batted in,with O’Brien getting two RBI’s. Also getting hits were Jacob Vetsch, Kyle Jansson and Seth Auger.

Hybl pitched the second game, a five inning affair, giving up just two hits. His teammates helped him out with 11 hits and they made no errors in the field.
Top hitters included Petrich, with three hits, including a triple and four stolen bases; O’Brien, two hits including double and two RBI’s; and Auger, two hits, including a double and two RBI’s.
On Thursday, June 24, the Brainerd VFW came to Staples, with the Brainerd VFW winning the first game 6-1 while Staples Motley came back to win the second (five inning) game 3-1.
Jordan Jenkins took the loss on the mound for the SM team, after pitching 6-1/3 innings. He faced 30 Brainerd batters, stuck out five, walked five and gave up just one earned run. He got relief help in the seventh inning from Jalen Busker and Alex Jansson.
Busker, Hybl and Jeremy Hoemberg each got hits for the SM team.
