Police report thefts, several other incidents

Staples Police in the past week had a black bear report, several thefts and numerous other calls reported.

Gerald Barthel reported seeing a black bear on the 1000 block of Pleasant Ave NE between 10:30 and 11 p.m. on June 27, while walking his dog. The bear was last seen running into a lot on the 1000 block of Park Ave NE.

Several recent thefts were also reported to police

Bill and Wendy Sather reported about 8 a.m. on June 26, that during the night someone came into there back yard at 830 Pleasant Avenue N.E. and took three lawn ornaments and two hanging baskets of flowers. The lawn ornaments were described as two metal heart shaped objects with a steel rod that sticks in the ground. The other was a steel rod with two hooks to hold hanging baskets.

Gary Schwanke reported about 6 a.m. June 26 the theft of six bird feeders and three black iron poles from his yard at 430 8th St N.E. The theft occurred between 9 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Saturday. The items are valued at $100.

Another theft report came in June 25. Staples Police were called to 419 McKinley for the theft of medication. The owner, Beverly Larson Van Vickel said that a person that had been living there that she had removed last week stole her medication. She gave the officers the name and said she wanted the other person arrested. It is currently under investigation.

On June 21, Julie Lynn Kenyon of 102 Airview Drive reported two bicycles stolen. They had been in the parking lot the last time she saw them. One was a Mongoose boys bike, silver in color, and the other one was a green boys bike with red and black rims. They have been missing about two weeks.

Police on June 25 received a report that people were living a motorhome parked on the street. Contact was made with the owners and they were informed of the city ordinances. Suggestions were offered to the owner of the motorhome the availability of the Dower Lake campground and other locations that were available to him.

On June 24, around 11:59 a.m., Staples Police were dispatched to 407 7th Street NE, for a damage to property complaint. Ernest Behrens reported that some juveniles had damaged a window screen on the north side of the apartment building. It was determined that the incident was an accident and the parents of the responsible juvenile were advised to pay for the minor damaged window.

On June 22, officers observed two males walking on Fourth St. NE. When they saw the patrol car they took off running through residential yards. Officers pursued the individuals losing them when they ran through yards near the high school. Officers later located the two juvenile males at the Burger King parking lot where they were cited for curfew violation and fleeing from an officer on foot.

On June 21, about 10:20 p.m., Staples Police stopped a vehicle for no tail lights after dark The driver had no drivers license with her. Her license was revoked and she was cited for driving after revocation.

On June 25, while on a call across the street on Dakota Avenue SE, an officer was approached by James Lange Sr. a who made a complaint about Judy Borg’s dog on his property. This officer went to Lange’s property and saw the dog on Lange’s property at that time. Contact was made with the dog’s owner, Judy Borg who said the dog was hers and had been out only a short time. Lange said this was not the first time she has had dogs loose. Borg was issued a citation for dog at large. She refused an administrative citation and was then issued a state citation.
