Digging for gold
Two U of M grad students - Theodor Maghrak and Alison Reiter - scraped dirt from their pit at Old Wadena last week, later running a pail full of dirt through a sifting screen to determine what they had. Most of their pits are two meters square and about 30 centimeters deep. Prof. Kat Hayes has 12 students and a teaching assistant working for four weeks at the Old Wadena site this summer. So far their efforts have turned up numerous interesting artifacts, including gunflint, two copper pieces, a belt buckle, an obsidian flake, a spring probably from a lock on a gun and several other items which will go back to the U of M labs for further study. The Wadena County Historical Society is hosting the group for the second year. (Staples World photo by Tom Crawford)
