Arrest results from hit and run report
The Staples Police Department reported another busy week.
Among numerous other calls, incidents included:
o Police responded to the Douglas Fahnlander residence in the 200 block of Fifth Street at 4:52 p.m. on Thursday, June 10. Fahnlander reported his van had been hit by a car while parked on the street. He told police the driver then fled the scene.
Police later located Aaron Schwartz, the driver of the vehicle, and arrested him for leaving the scene of an accident. He was also charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance. He was transported to the Todd County jail in Long Prairie. Fahnlander’s van had significant rear end damage.
o About 2:47 p.m. on June 7, Staples officer Jeff Jares saw a vehicle drive over the center line of the roadway on Thunder Road. The vehicle was stopped and the owner gave permission to have his vehicle searched.
During the stop, Staples officers Goff and Huber assisted Officer Jeff Jares with two males in the vehicle. Prescription medications were found in the vehicle that the occupants said were not theirs. Police said possible charges may stem from this incident pending further investigation.
o Officers responded shortly before midnight June 8 to a report of a missing person. The party who was reported as missing, however, was later located and was fine, police said.
o Janet Kiley reported on June 10 that sometime on Sunday, June 6 her Dodge pickup was vandalized while it was parked on the street at 631 Third Avenue. Someone threw an egg at it and smeared it with a red dye or paint.
o Police cited a home owner June 10 under the city’s ordinance for a barking dog. They said they had repeated calls to the Jennifer Thotland residence at 1400 Eighth Street N.E.
o Robert Shaffer of rural Staples reported June 13 that his daughter had lost a bracelet in the city parking lot behind the Stomping Grounds coffee house. They had looked for but could not locate the bracelet, which was silver with hearts and a cross on it.
o Police responded to the Gregg Robinson residence at 801 Prairie Avenue June 13 for a damage to property complaint, the third time in recent days they have reported vandalism there.
o Super America employee Daniel Davis reported on June 12 that a male party in the store about 9 p.m. the night before became upset when he had to wait in line and was acting belligerent towards staff and using profanity while in the store.
