Am. Legion Auxiliary brings home awards

Current Sixth District Membership Chairman, Judy Samuelson, is on the right. The Sixth District American Legion Convention was held at St. Augusta on June 5. Delegates attending from the Staples Unit #70 Legion Auxiliary were LaDonna Peterson, Rita Stone and Fran Mertens. LaDonna served as a Convention Color Bearer and Rita was an Election Judge.

Memberships in the Staples Unit #70 has increased the past year and the unit received a certifi- cate for reaching 100 percent of goal. “Actually, we attained 123.40 percent of goal,” said Carol Olsen. For this distinction the unit took home a Sixth District Membership Travel Award, awarded in each classification with the greatest percentage increase in membership.

Unit #70 was also presented the Sixth District American Legion Auxiliary Bernice Holm History Traveling award for the best History of Units with 150 members or less. Unit #70 has received this award in 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Staples Unit #70 also received citations for their reports on nine projects: Americanism, Children and Youth, History, Legislation, National Security, Poppy Day, Public Relations, Veterans’ Affairs and Rehabilitation and Home Service. The unit also received Honorable Mention for their Junior Activities and Memorial Day reports.

The awards are based on reports received at the district and department levels by April 15, from the local units in the state.

The department convention will be held at Rochester in July.
