The Cowboys wo n 6 - 5 , but not without a fight from the Staples Motley boys. This was just the second loss of the season for SM, and they finished with a 18-2 record, and were Mid State Conference champions with 10 wins and no losses. Up next are Section 8AA playoffs, starting with a home game on Thursday, June 3.
“We scored early, and we scored late,” said Coach John Riewer, “But we could not do anything in the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings offensively. We had our chances, but we failed to get the big hit when we needed it, and defensively we failed to make the plays at key times in the game.”
Although the Cardinals had nine hits, they weren’t able to capitalize on them and only scored five runs. They also made two errors in the field, to Breckenridge’s one. Putting down hits for the Cards were Alex Jansson, Trevor Smith, Jordan Riewer (who had a double as well), Gunner Johnson, who smacked a triple in the first, Brandon Haglin (two singles), Dylan Shequen a double in the seventh and Tyler Jenniges.
On the mound were Jeremy Hoemberg and Jansson. “Jeremy and Alex pitched well enough to give us a chance for the win and that is all you can ask out of your pitchers. A great comeback that fell short,” Coach Riewer said.
“We had an excellent season,”
Riewer commented, “And we need to be ready
to go next week physically, but more importantly, mentally. Playoff baseball is one of my favorite times of the year. I hope we can put it all together as a team, and see just how far we can go. Only time will tell.”
Staples Motley is the top seed, which insures home field advantage when the playoffs begin this Thursday at 5 p.m, on the Cardinal field.
