Over $81,000 in scholarships awarded

Sixty six people, 63 of them members of the Staples Motley High School Class of 2010, shared in over $81,000 in scholarships presented May 19 by the Staples Motley Dollars for Scholars chapter.

Roger Houselog, president of the local Dollars for Scholars group, presided over the annual event as emcee. Other community members of the Dollars for Scholars chapter worked throughout the annual scholarship program keeping records and other duties.

Receiving the Harold Griffiths $5,000 scholarship, renewable for four years, was SMHS senior Brandon Haglin. He plans to attend Bemidji State University.

He plans to attend Alexandria Technical College.

The local Dollars for Scholars over the years has been the recipient of more than $250,000 from Harold Griffiths, a Motley High School graduate from the 1940s who went on to a successful business career.

Kaytlin Roth was the recipient of a new four year, $750 scholarship, renewable for four years. This was the Royale B. and Eleanor M. Arvig Memorial scholarship.

Michelle Hart was this year’s recipient of the local Dollars for Scholars scholarship for a non-traditional student. She received $500 to be used to pursue additional education.
