“This is the most people we’ve ever had on this field,” Coach Ryan Beachy said Thurs- day as the Cards hosted the Section True Team track meet for the first time.

Runners and track fans from ten schools were on hand for the meet that ran from noon to 6 p.m. on a cool and rainy afternoon.

The biggest meet of the season saw nine Class AA teams traveling to Staples, including Sartell, which won the meet with 582 points, and Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Little Falls, Perham, East Grand Forks, St. Cloud Cathedral, Pequot Lakes and Thief River Falls.

The Cardinals still took fourth place, despite the tough competition, helped by one second place finish, that one coming from sprinter Ashley Lisson in the 200 meter dash.

They also had two third places (Lisson in the 100 meters and the 4x800 relay team of Abby Smith, Courtney Lisson, Kyann Nyhus, Kaytlin Roth) and two fourth place finishes from Kelly Pearson in the 100m hurdles and Katlynn Ulring in pole vaulting. Kelly Pearson, who was out for almost a month due to an ankle injury, is back and looking strong in the hurdle events. She also took fifth place in the 300m hurdles. The four by 100 relay (Wing, Koskiniemi, O’Keefe, Lisson) took fifth, as did Kaytlin Roth in the high jump.

Only the first place team at the section true team meet advances to the state meet, which will be this Saturday.

This week the girls were at the Mid State Conference Meet in Park Rapids on Tuesday. Two previous meets - at C-I and Hawley, were scratched due to the weather.

Their next schedueld meet is the Sub Section track meet May 28 at Sebeka. The girls Section 8AA track meet is June 3 at Moorhead State.

Leaping Cardinal Ninth grader Jaelin Beachy cleared one of the final hurdles on her way to a 18.3 second finish in the 100 meter hurdles race on May 13. Her ninth place finish added points to the Cardinal team total, with the Staples Motley girls finishing fourth among 10 schools in the Section True Team track meet.
