Forsberg medalist at Cardinal Invite
Cardinal golfer Nick Forsberg continued last week to turn in some of the best performances so far this spring on central and northern Minnesota golf courses.
Nick topped off his week with medalist honors Saturday at the Cardinal Invitational at The Vintage at Staples. Nick led the field with a three over par round of 75. Teamm at e s turned in some of their better rounds as well on the Cardinals’ home course, with Michael Strain carding an 82, Mitch Hagenson 83 and Tanner Roberts 84. Zach Israelson and Trent Hagenson each finished at 85 as the Cardinal team finished in second place in team standings with a 324 total score.
Roseau, at 317, with five players in the top ten, claimed the team title. Third place went to St. Cloud Cathedral at 327 and fourth was a 330 score turned in by the Shattuck- St. Mary’s team from Faribault.
A second Staples Motley team rounded out the 15 teams who played under wet and threatening conditions Saturday. Scores for the SM JV players included 96 for Zach Schmitz, 101 for Dakota Waverek and rounds of 102 for both Kyle Quast and Brandon Hosier.

Forsberg had shot a 71 on Thursday at the Brainerd Invitational held at The Preserve, a score good for second behind a 70 turned in by Colton Buege from Rogers.
The Cardinals team’s four-man total of 322 was good for a tie for ninth place in a 20-team field that included many of the class teams in Class AAA and AA this year. Rogers won the meet with a 290 total, with St. Paul Park second at 307 and Lakeville South coming in third at 310.
For the Cards, after Forsberg’s 71, scores included Zach Israelson 79, Michael Strain 85, Tanner Roberts 87, Erik Nelson 98 and Andrew Nelson 87.
Friday, the Cardinals played in both the Menahga Invitational and the first Mid Minn Conference meet, which was played within the invite Friday at Blueberry Pines Golf Club.

Staples Motley was fifth in the invitational with a 359 total score. The Cards were also second in the Mid Minn with 34.5 points,behind Pequots Lakes 46
For the Mid Minn meet, Pequot scored a 425 to secure 46 points.
Staples Motley was led by Eric Nelson’s 84. Other scores included Trent Hagenson 88, Derek DeYonge 91, Logan Svendsrud 96, Mitch Hagenson 97 and Andrew Nelson 100.
