Diamond team, 6-0, wins 3 more
Pitcher Gunner Johnson fired off a no-hitter to lead the Staples Motley Cardinal baseball team to three wins this past week. The team is still undefeated after downing Pequot Lakes twice and getting a 7-3 win against previ- ously undefeated Bertha- Hewitt.
O n April 20, a beautiful day for baseball, the boys hosted Mid State Conference rival Pequot Lakes. The SM boys scored 28 runs, winning both games of the double header, the first game 11-1 and the second 17-1.
On the mound for the first game was senior Gunner Johnson, who had a great night. Pitching a no-hitter and striking out 12 batters in six innings, he also had a great game at the plate going two for three, and stealing a base.
“It’s not every day you get to see a no-hitter in baseball, at any level, I am very happy for Gunner and his teammates who supported him with solid defensive play,” Coach John Riewer commented.

Behind Johnson was a tight defense and a solid offense. “Brandon Haglin called a great game, and we got some big hits from Gunner, Trevor Smith, Tyler Jenniges and Alex Jansson.”
Game two ended in much the same way. Alex Jansson took the mound, and gave up just one run. The Cardinals won in the fifth inning by the ten run rule. Staples Motley got the bats going this game, with 12 hits coming from nine Cardinals. Jansson, Smith, Haglin, Shequen, Carter, Jenniges and Duberowski all put down singles; Riewer had two hits while Johnson had another great game going three for four.
“Another well pitched game for us by Jansson and Tyler Jenniges. Outstanding defensive plays in the field by Beebe, Riewer, Duberowski, Jansson, and Johnson,” Coach Riewer said. “We still have a lot of things to work on, but we are gaining confidence with each game.”
Safe at first
Friday night the boys met a tough, undefeated ball club from Bertha- Hewitt, but the Staples Motley boys lived up to the challenge. With Jordan Riewer on the mound and a tight defense behind him, the Cardinals held the Bears to just three runs.
Meanwhile the SM batters got their lumber moving and scored seven, handing Bertha Hewitt their first loss of the season. Getting hits for the Cardinals were Jansson, Smith, Riewer, Jenniges Duberowski and two from Johnson.
Staples Motley is now 6-0, and they’ve won two games in the Mid-State Conference.
The Cards hosted the Lakers from Minnewaska on Tuesday night. Friday they will again be here in Staples, this time hosting Park Rapids, with the double header starting at 4 p.m.
