Windows broken at depot
For the second time since last fall, windows that were recently restored in the Staples depot building were broken by rockthrowing vandals this weekend.
About 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning, Tom Kajer, a member of the Staples Historical Society, reported to police that rocks had been thrown into windows on the south side of the depot. An officer responded and found three of the four south facing windows, had been broken. A number of rocks, taken from ballast rock along the railroad tracks, were found alongside the building.
The windows were removed and rebuilt last summer and fall by SHS member Bruce Nelsen. There was damage to the glass in the windows in January, when someone came inside the building and threw potted plants through the windows from inside. That damage was repaired with the glass replaced. This time all the damage appeared to be cause by people throwing rocks at the windows from the outside.
The historical society has established a reward fund and is asking the public’s help in trying to apprehend those responsible for this vandalism.
In other reports, police said they made an arrest Saturday, April 24 on charges of driving while intoxicated. John Wayne Chouinard, 24, of Verndale was stopped about 1:30 a.m. on Highway 10 after officers observed his vehicle being driven erratically. Following subsequent investigation, the driver was arrested for DUI.
The front glass door of the Staples Off Sale building on Second Avenue in Staples was shattered on the morning of April 23. Police were called but found no evidence of anyone gaining entrance to the building.
Numerous other incidents reported this week included citations for speeding and other traffic cases, domestic arguments and other calls.
