Cardinals set to begin 2010 tennis season
The Cardinal boys tennis team is already in full swing with two scrimmages and a doubles tournament in Lakeville.
Led by three seniors and a mass of sophomores, the Cardinals are re- turning a good amount of experience and talent to a team that has been on the bubble the last few years in breaking through to state tournament level of play.
Senior Jordan Peterson is coming into the season
of two trips to state in
singles and one in doubles. “It’s been a real pleasure
watching Jordan develop as a great player, but even more fun watching him mature into the leader.”
Other strong play and leadership is expected
from seniors Derek Wolhowe
and Anthony Duhn. “Derek and Anthony have
already proven their valuable contribution to a fairly young team by modeling the character we need,”Coach Coughlin said. Both Wolhowe and Duhn are expected to anchor the doubles line up while Peterson paves the way at first singles.
Eight sophomores represent the majority of the team. Guthrie Coughlin is expected to play a key role in both the singles and doubles
line up in his fourth
year of varsity action. “Guthrie, among many of
the other sophomores, is a fine talent, but we need to keep in mind that all of these young men are still quite young and need time and experience to develop their whole game.
Also returning with a good amount of varsity experience are sophomores Grant Longbella, Austin Hirschey, Shane Suess, Josh Solway and Matt Spar. Each of these players have the ability to play either singles or doubles. Robin Melse and Nick Johnson also had some varsity experience last year.
The lone freshman is Dale Vogt, who has been working very hard.
The Cards have already played scrimmages against St. Cloud Tech and Brainerd. Both matches went very well with a great deal of progress.
The Cards also saw action in an eight team doubles tournament in Lakeville going up against Coon Rapids, Eagan, Lakeville North, Rosemount and a host of other AA schools.
“This was a real treat to play in such a venue against strong competition. We are normally shoveling off the courts at this time.”
The Cards start regular action this Thursday at home against Wadena-Deer Creek and move on to an eight team tournament at
