Cardinal track girls claims HOL title

By Kelley Kossan World sports writer

The Lady Cardinals started out the 2010 season in a great way, taking first place in their opening meet- Tuesday, April 6.

The Staples Motley girls com- peted at Conc ordia College in the Heart O’ Lakes Indoor Invitational, finishing first with 136 points. “We had a lot of girls that didn’t compete, due to the fact that many of them were involved in musical contests and All-State tryouts. So we were pleasantly surprised that the team took first,” said Coach Beachy.

The Cards had eight first place finishes, and five second places. Senior Ashley Lisson ran the 100 meter dash in 7.34 seconds for first, she also finished second in the 200 meters. Long distance runner Emma Pogreba took first in the 3200m run, as did Kaitlin Roth in the high jump, Jaelin Beachy in the long jump and Nikki Pearson in triple jump.

Both the 4x200 (Lisson, N. Pearson, Peterson, and Beachy) and the 4x800 (Roth, Klimek, Nyhus, and Pogreba) Relay teams took first.

Eighth grader Kelly Pearson is off to a good start, along with taking first in the 100 meter hurdles she also set the school record, and her class record, with a time of 8.98 seconds.

Taking second were Roth in the 800 meters, Jaelin Beachy in the 100m hurdles, and the 4x4 Relay team of K. Pearson, Roth, Peterson and Beachy.

The team will be hosting the Cardinal Rainmaker this Thursday (April 15), the first of two home meets for the 2010 season.

The second is the Section True Team meet on Tuesday, May 11th.
