Businesses can get free H1N1 immunizations

Todd County Public Health (TCPH) is offering free on-site H1N1 flu vaccination clinics during the month of April to businesses.

A minimum of 10 people is required. TCPH will vaccinate employees, family members, clients, partners, neighboring businesses, etc.

One form of the vaccine will be available: the injection (shot). It is available for all age groups, six months to 100 years of age.

You should not get H1N1 vaccine if you have a severe (life-threatening) allergy to eggs or to any other substance in the vaccine, have any severe allergies, have had a life-threatening allergic reaction after a dose of seasonal flu vaccine, or Guillain Barre Syndrome (a severe paralytic illness also called GBS).

There is no cost to the business, or individuals receiving the immunization. Participants are asked to bring their medical insurance cards if they have one. TCPH will submit a claim to their insurance company for a small administration fee, but you will not be charged if your insurance does not cover this. Those without insurance are encouraged to attend and will be vaccinated at no fee.

Registered nurse(s) will come into your business, set up and administer the vaccinations. This process will allow you to continue business as usual, while helping to keep your employees safe and healthy.

According to TCPH, “Influenza normally peaks in the months of February and March. With the second wave of pandemic H1N1 influenza slowing down and even declared ‘over,’ many people have become complacent about a possible third wave. If the 2009 H1N1 pandemic is like other pandemics, a third wave of illness could occur later this winter or early spring of 2010. Getting the vaccine now will provide protection when the next wave arrives.”

Providing the flu shot is one of the best ways to keep your employees healthy and productive. It reduces the spread of influenza illnesses among workers, customers and high risk individuals in the community, TCPH continued. “It reduces absenteeism and saves cost in employee sick time,” they added.
