John Matanich

John S. Matanich of Chisago City died March 12, 2010 at his home.

A gathering of friends and families will be scheduled at a later date.

Arrangements were with the Henry W. Anderson Mortuary, Apple Valley.

John was born Nov. 26, 1944 in Lebanon, Kentucky to Michael and Marcella (Abell) Matanich. He grew up in Staples and graduated from Staples High School in 1963. He was a member of the National Honor Society, participated in basketball, baseball, track and football during high school.

John attended North Dakota State University. He was the team’s halfback and punter on NDSU’s first undefeated National Football Championship team in 1965. He was later inducted into the university’s Bison Hall of Fame. John was a machinist and also taught machine shop at North Hennepin Community

College.

He was an avid fisherman, mainly on the Crow Wing River with his father and brothers. He also enjoyed golf and the game of Blackjack.

John is survived by his mother, one daughter, Julia (Darryl, Sr.) Hudson, three grandchildren, two brothers, Michael (Lori); Mark (Amy) Matanich; three sisters, Marcy Kruchten; Julie Wethington; Angie Hungrecker; many nieces and nephews; and lifelong friend, Bob Fellman.

He was preceded in death by his father.
