Police report high speed chase

Staples Police officers, responding to a call to assist Todd County deputies, became involved in a high speed chase early Sunday morning.

Officers backed off from the pursuit on Highway 210 and eventually located the vehicle and suspect at a County Road 21 residence, where he was taken into custody.

The incident began shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday when Todd County requested assistance on a possibly suicidal man identified as Andrew G. Jackson, 37. A woman reported that Jackson had left her residence in a red Ford Mustang.

A Staples police officer located the vehicle at County Road 21 and Highway 210, but the vehicle fled westbound on Highway 210 when he attempted a traffic stop. The offi- cer pursued at speeds of over 100 miles per hour. During the pursuit, the officer was informed the woman was talking to Jackson. She told dispatchers that Jackson had taken several pills and was threatening to crash his vehicle.

Staples and Todd County officers discontinued the pursuit at that point, following at a distance until losing sight of the vehicle in the Aldrich-Verndale vicinity.

Police said a short time later they located the suspect vehicle back at the woman’s County Road 21 address, where Jackson was taken into custody without incident. After an evaluation at the Lakewood Health System Emergency Room, Jackson was taken to the Todd County jail.

Staples Police also handled numerous other calls in the past week. In addition to other items, they conducted checks on predatory offenders at nine different residences in the city, checking and updating files on each individual.
