Calendar changes for Motley’s City Council and City Hall
In addition to setting their clocks ahead for Daylight Saving Time, folks from the Motley area may want to jot down a couple of other calendar changes.
Starting in April, the Motley City Council will hold their regular meetings just once a month; and Motley City Hall will be closed on Fridays.
These decisions were made at the council’s regular meeting March 9.
The idea of going from two to one council meeting a month had been discussed at council meetings in the past.
Council member Nancy Nieken said she felt that agenda items could be addressed during one regular meeting. A special meeting could always be called, Nieken added, if more time was needed on a particular item.
Nieken’s motion, to go to one meeting a month and see how it goes, passed in a roll call vote. Council member Rob Sampson was the lone nay-sayer; with Mayor Konrad Alexander and council members Bruce Mills and Nieken voting in favor of the change. Council member Duane Solga was not at the meeting.
Consequently, the next regular Motley City Council meeting will be Tuesday, April 13, at 7 p.m.
The idea of changing hours at Motley City Hall had first been proposed by Nieken at the regular council meeting Feb. 9. She felt that closing the office each day at 2 or 2:30 p.m. would allow staff to work without interruptions.
Presently, office hours at city hall are 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday - Friday.
At their regular meeting March 9, the council discussed a couple of options for changing the offi ce hours.
The first option was to remain open Monday - Friday, but to close at 2 p.m. daily.
Although this option allowed access to city hall every day, it would only allow for one and one-half hours per day of uninterrupted time to get work done. It would also make city hall inaccessible to employees of Trident and Morey’s.
Option number two was to close city hall one day per week.
This option would allow for eight continuous hours of uninterrupted time for tasks, such as preparing for council meetings and working in the filing room.
It would also allow access to city hall for employees of Trident and Morey’s; and would allow for meetings to be held within regular work hours without having to go to the counter or answer phones.
The down-side to this option was that there would not be access to city hall one day a week.
During their discussion about these two options, the council’s consensus was that option number two would be the best.
City Clerk/Treasurer Terri Smith said that if the council were to approve this option, she would prefer Friday be the day city hall would be closed. That is the day she spends preparing for city council meetings, she explained.
Nieken made a motion that city hall be closed on Fridays, beginning April 2; and to see how it works. The motion passed, in a unanimous vote by the council.
