Cemetery walk planned by Todd Cty. Historical Society

The Todd County Historical Society met March 1, at the museum. President Shirley Lunceford brought the meeting to order with 21 members in attendance.

A cemetery walk was discussed. Ron Wienhold will write scripts on six or seven people. Names mentioned were Ray and Cecile Cowdery, Maude Gutches, Cora and Dora Fisher, Dr. Handy, Joyce Lewis, the Harts, Sargents and Lees. This is scheduled for Sunday, May 30.

The society is looking for unusual rocks, one from each of the 28 townships, to place around the base of the flag pole by the building on the fairgrounds. If anyone has one they are encouraged to bring it to the museum.

The gift shop committee has set up a book signing event for March 19 from 2-5 p.m. at the museum. Kenny Stevens will be on hand to sign the book “By Dammit, We’re Marines”. It contains veterans’ stories of heroism, horror and humor in World War II on the Pacific front. The author is Gail Chatfield and in the book is a chapter on Kenny Stevens, a Long Prairie resident. Books can be purchased and refreshments will be served. The public is invited.

The state is looking for the 10 most endangered buildings in Minnesota and will award $2,500 to those that are selected. The courthouse could be one. There will be four informative meetings to get the facts out to the public about the usability and cost. Nate Burkett will come to our April meeting.

The book review was well attended. There was a large variety of subjects discussed. Another one will be held on March 28 at 2 p.m. at the museum. Share a book or just listen. The public is invited.

Gary Stracek reported on the Region 5 meeting. David Grabinski from the Minnesota Historical Society gave information on writing grants. He said the money is out there, just write the grant but be specifi c about what you want the money for. Lighting would be priority and Minnesota Power should be contacted to do an audit.

The theme for the county fair this year has to do with the history of churches. Anyone who has pictures, articles, memorabilia from churches and would like to lend it to the museum for a display would be appreciated. Just bring them to the museum.

Nancy Kjeldahl had the program. She spoke about the problems her French ancestors encountered when they came to Minnesota from Michigan and settled in the Swanville area.
