Fifteen SMHS speakers win awards at Osakis
      Senior Shelby Wilds won her fourth championship in Great Speeches and senior co-captain Gemma Shaffer was the champion Storyteller to lead the Cardinal Speech Team award -winners in the Osakis Speech Tournament Feb. 27. Jonathan Nypan in Extemporaneous Reading, Kaytlin Roth in Prose and Brianna Miles in Storytelling earned second place medals.

Reader greeter and awards
     Students at Staples Elementary School received their Read-A-Thon awards during a ceremony held Feb. 26. Their reading goal was 2,000 minutes and the promise that Principal Jason Luksik would wear the Cardinal costume - they did and he did. Students even exceeded their goal by 983 minutes.

Menk wins six graphic awards for advertising excellence
     LayShia (Sheets) Menk, formerly of Staples, recently won six Better Newspaper Contest graphic awards for the Yazoo Herald advertising staff where she is employed in Yazoo City, Mississippi. Menk won three first place honors in the Weekly Division B with “Best Grocery or Restaurant Advertisement”, “Best Single Magazine Advertisement”

U.S Census Bureau hiring
      The U.S. Census Bureau is hoping to recruit local residents as official census takers to work on the 2010 Census. “It’s important for the residents of Northwestern Minnesota to know that we are indeed testing people for jobs and that we are also hiring people,” said Dennis Johnson, Regional Director of the U.S. Census Bureau.
