Emily Ladd, 7th grader at Motley Staples Middle School, placed third at the regional Lakes Bee Spelling Bee held in Brainerd Feb. 19. Emily was just three words away from heading to Washington D.C. this spring for the National Spelling Bee. Emily is the daughter of Kyra Ladd and Blaine Quast. The event was sponsored by National Joint Powers Alliance in Staples. This final local spelling bee was a bridge between the school district spelling bee level and Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. the winner, Ashlee Hauble, is an eighth grader in the Brainerd School district. She will be traveling to Washington D.C. May 31 - June 6, to compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The top three spellers received trophies and prizes with all 37 contestants receiving a Lakes Bee participation medallion.
