Cardinal boys gain two more wins

Four cardinals scored in double figures as the Staples Motley boys basketball team snapped a seven game winning streak for the Minnewaska Lakers in a 59-46 win Fr iday night, Feb. 12.

Jon Bristow led the Cards with 14 points, with Jordan Riewer adding 11. Gunner Johnson and Jordan Peterson added 10 each as the team notched their eighth win in a row and stretched their season record to 16 wins and three losses.

Trailing 12 to 11, the Cards used a 12-point run in the first half to break open what had been a tight ball game. Bristow got three baskets in close, while Jordan Peterson hit two threes for the unbroken stretch of Cardinal points. The Lakers scored six points to close out the half, with the Cards up 27-22.

That was about as close as it got as the Cards outscored the Lakers 32-24 in the second half.

The night before, the Cards traveled to Pierz to gain a 94-60 win.

Trevor Wentworth added 16; Riewer had 14 and Jason Johnson scored 11 at Pierz.

The Cardinals, who remain a perfect 8-0 at home after the Laker win, are led in scoring by Riewer, who has scored 292 points for a 15.4 average. Riewer also has 125 rebounds (second to Wolhowe) and leads the team in assists with 163, in steals with 67, and has blocked nine shots. Jordan has made 44 of 50 free throw attempts.

Wolhowe is second on the team in scoring with 258 points, good for 13.6 ppg. He leads the team in rebounds with 143, including 38 offensive rebounds. Derek also has 44 assists and 25 steals.

Bristow has 214 points (11.3 ppg) and had 99 rebounds, 30 coming under the Cardinal basket.

Jason Johnson is the team’s fourth leading scorer with 154 points (9.1 ppg). Trevor Wentworth comes in at 7.1 ppg with 135 points and Gunner Johnson has 108 points this season or 6 points a game. Jordan Peterson has 102 points and is making about 5.4 ppg.

(Staples World photo by Tom Crawford) This week Staples Motley, which is in second place in the Mid State Conference witha a 6-1 record, hosts Park Rapids on Friday night and will be traveling to Breckenridge on Saturday to join the Cardinal girls in double-header action on the Cowboy court. Next Tuesday Grand Rapids comes in to start a three-game home stretch as the season nears the end of the regular schedule.
