Police report rash of accidents
Highway 10 demo derby One car with it
Drivers headed west on Highway 10 Sunday afternoon found a stretch of hazardous roadway for a few hours.
Staples police reported that as many as nine vehicles may have been in the ditch along a two to three mile stretch of Highway 10 between 3 and 5 p.m. Sunday. There were no serious injuries reported.
The Minnesota State Patrol responded to several reports of vehicles in the ditch along a mile or more of westbound Highway 10, with Staples police the first on the scene.
A Staples officer responded to a first call about 3:41 p.m. Sunday after noon. This one occurred about a quarter mile east of the Staples Vet Clinic, according to the report. The driver, 19-yearold Amanda Anderson reported she was west bound when her mid-size truck started to fish tail and she lost control with the vehicle rolling over and ending up in the east bound lane on its wheels. She was apparently unhurt.
In the next few minutes, the officer watched as another vehicle slid in the ditch in the west bound lane. Everyone in that vehicle was reported unhurt. While a state trooper was writing up that accident, another vehicle lost control and rear ended the tow truck that was pulling the second vehicle out of the ditch.
Shortly after 4 p.m., offi- cers were called to reports of additional vehicles in the ditch on Highway 10 about one mile east of the Lakewood Hospital site. Officers found one vehicle that had rolled but was right side up, plus other vehicles in the ditch due to icy road conditions. The SPD assisted as a Todd County sheriff’s deputy, two state patrol squads, the Motley Police Department and Staples Fire and Rescue Department were all on the scene, plus wreckers from Scott’s Southtown and Cyrus Auto Repair. At least one vehicle had rolled and had extensive damage to the roof.
There were no injuries in a two-vehicle accident Feb. 2 in Staples. The accident happened at 7:06 p.m. at the intersection of Prairie Avenue N. E. and Airport Road. Both vehicles had major damage, but neither driver was hurt.
