Cardinal boys earn three big wins in busy week

Three strong wins were in store for Cardinal boys last week, the squad taking out their frustrations for the Jan. 19 loss to Crosby -Iron- ton on WadenaDC, Park Rapids and Little Falls.

Jordan Riewer poured in 33 points on Ja n . 26 to lead SM to a 79-61 Mid State Conf erence win over the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines.

Jon Bristow added 17 points followed by Derek Wolhowe with 14 and Jordan Peterson’s 13. Wolhowe also had 13 rebounds for a double double against the Wolverines.

Friday night at Park Rapids, Wolhowe was the big point producer with 23 points to lead the Cards to an 87-50 win over the Panthers and improve the Cardinals Mid State record to 5-1.

Riewer added 17 points and also had 16 assists for his DD, while Trevor Wentworth and Bristow each had 11 points

Jordan Riewer scored 27 points, had 10 assists and pulled down seven rebounds for the Cardinals in an 83-72 victory over the Little Falls Flyers Saturday. This was a make-up of a game postponed from one week before.

Jason (JJ) Johnson added 17 points, Wolhowe 14 and Gunner Johnson put in 10 as the Cards rallied from a one point halftime deficit to defeat the Flyers, who were led by Dan Kornbaum’s 30 points.

SM, which shot an amazing 55 percent from three point range (10 /18), outscored the Flyers 44-32 in the second half.

Following the three games, the boys had a record of 11 wins and three losses, with a 5-1 Mid State Conference record.

After 14 games (through Little Falls) this year’s Cardinal team is scoring at a 70 points a game average, while holding their opponents to 61 ppg. SM is shooting at a 50 percent success rate for all field goals (367/734), and 36 percent (102/281) for three point shots. Their team free throw success is at 70 percent (144/205) after 14 games.

Riewer, with 222 points this season, is at a 15.9 points per game production. Fellow senior Wolhowe is close behind, at 13.8 ppg, on 193 points, with Jon Bristow also in double figures at 10.8 ppg for the season on 151 points. Jason Johnson is at 9.4, with Wentworth at 6.9 and Gunner Johnson at 6.1.

Riewer also leads the Cards in rebounding with 101 total; in assists with 120, steals with 48 and eight blocks. He also leads in turnovers, at 44 and fouls at 41.

This week SM hosted Pillager in a rare Monday night game. They have games this Saturday at Pequot Lakes and Saturday with Minneapolis Washburn coming to town.
