Charlotte Hed
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at the Cambridge Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. David Everett officiating. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Carlson-Lillemoen Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with the Carlson-Lillemoen Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Cambridge. Charlotte was born Sept. 13, 1936 in Germantown, Pennsylvania to Paul and Katharine (Smith) Empie and was baptized at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Germantown. She was later confirmed in Nutley, New Jersey. Charlotte grew up in Pennsylvania and later New Jersey where she graduated from Montclair High School in 1954. She went on to graduate from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio in 1958. On Aug. 9, 1958, she married Walter Hed at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Nutley, N.J. They moved to Dubuque, Iowa where Wally attended Wartburg Theological Seminary while Charlotte taught school in Galena, Ill. Charlotte followed her husband’s call to serve as pastor at Grace Lutheran Church in Scarsdale, New York, Clinton, Maryland, Paget, Bermuda before moving to Champlin. She went back to school and earned a degree in occupational therapy from St. Catherine’s University. Charlotte worked for Rehab Dynamics, retiring in the early 1990s. In 1996 they moved to Cambridge. She was an active member of Cambridge Evangelical Lutheran Church. Charlotte enjoyed crafting, playing the piano, and an interest in nutrition. Charlotte is survived by her husband; one daughter, Kathy (Jeff) Iverson of Staples; two sons, Steve (Jennifer) Hed of Putney, Vt., Paul (Michelle) Hed of Ham Lake, nine grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara (Larry) Greene of Zionsville, Pa.; Susan Lower of Nacogdoches, Texas; as well as nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter-in-law, Nina Axelrad; and one granddaughter. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
