Food Shelf

2010-01-28 / Letters

The Staples Area food Shelf has had another successful year thanks to the generous people and organizations of Staples. During the holiday season we were overwhelmed with the amount of food and cash donations, we went through all of it in a short time as we had the busiest turn out of clients than ever before.

Our biggest achievement this year was our move to a different location. We are now at 402 Wisconsin Ave. SE in the back area of the Lions Building.

It needed some changes and the Staples Host Lions members did a wonderful job remodeling to meet our needs. We thank them. Also Wilson Electric, who donated his time rewiring; Busker Concrete, for donating cement and work on the side walks; city employees, who moved the large refrigerator and freezers; Staples Sign Company and Bill Kavanaugh for signs. When we moved we had young people and parents from local church youth groups transferring everything and replacing food on the shelves.

We have added two new board members, Phyllis Paskewitz and Steve Pogreba, but were saddened at the loss of member Myra King.

Watch for more information on our open house to be held Feb. 25, the same day as the new Government Center open house. We will also be having our kick-off for our March campaign on

World that day.

Again this year, the food shelf will be applying for a grant from the Feinstein Foundation, which donates $1 million every year to anti-hunger agencies throughout the country. The more we collect from our drive the more we receive. Last year we were awarded $333.

Again, we thank everyone for all the help we have had in the past and hope it will continue. We wish we could list them all individually, but there are so many and also many that we don’t know of.

Please remember we do have many families that need a little extra help.
