Madhatters play ‘girl.’ now performing
Dani Henderson
Mad Lab, a new venture of Madhatters Community Theatre, will perform “girl.”, a play by Minnesota playwright Megan Mostyn- Brown, Jan. 14-16 at the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center and Jan. 21-23 at the Masonic Lodge of Wadena (above The Mall of Wadena). All performances are at 7 p.m.
The cast includes Caitlyn Kreller, Derrick Malaney and Lisa Holm from the Wadena area; Wynter Kidrowski from the Pillager area and Dani Henderson from the Verndale/Staples area.
Amy Hunter of Staples is the director, assisted by Heather Jacquart.
This play, performed in three acts and delivered in monologue, is about what it means to be a girl in this day and age. The actors show great strength, revealing their vulnerabilities in language that is honest and, at times, explicit.
Discussions include some hard topics like teen drug addiction, suicide, self mutilation, teen pregnancy, single parenting, runaways, promiscuity, date rape and abortion. Any of these issues, coupled with the pressures young people have from family, school, peers and society have the potential for disaster. It is hoped the play will break down communication barriers; be it parents and children, or teachers and students and encourage conversations that are proactive and meaningful.
