Volunteers from the Old Wadena Society and Staples 3M retirees have been working all fall on repairing and rebuilding sections of old docks. Tuesday they installed as many of the donated dock sections as they could on their ongoing bogwalk project at Old Wadena. They have six, 16-foot long sections to add to a similar number of sections placed a year ago. The workers included former 3M'ers Dick Lawrence, Mike Johnson, Ron Hines, John Rardin and Bill Opheim, plus Del Lecy, Stan Carlson and Tom Kajer. The 3M crews built two dollies (above) to haul the heavy steel docks and also attached an old pipe wrench to a boat lift wheel to make a handy tool for screwing 21-foot-long pipes into the bog for supports for each of the dock sections as they form a bogwalk. A 3M Foundation grant of $10,000 is paying for steel pipe, treated wood and other materials that have to be bought.Tuesday's work had been postponed twice before thisfall due to bad weather both days. At right, a 21-foot long pipe screws into the ground with the help of three men turning this wheel and wrench device. The 3M crew has a battery operated winch device on the planning boards for this job. (Staples World photos by Tom Crawford) |
