Seventeen inducted into National Honor Society

The annual induction program was held Nov. 25 at Centennial Auditorium. The seven seniors inducted into the NHS chapter a year ago conducted the ceremony. They included Kaytlin Roth and Ryan Carter who were emcees, Gemma Shaffer, Kelly Hagenson, Katlynn Ulring, Emma Motl and Abby Edin, who explained the history and meaning of the NHS symbols and qualifications.

High school English instructor Robert Shaffer was the program's guest speaker, choosing the theme "The Three H's, History, Humanity and Honor."

SENIORS

SAM DUBEROWSKI, son of Don and Mary Duberowski, has given a great deal of time and energy to serving through his church. His youth group activities include being part of the worship team, Vacation Bible School, food

shelf collections and ministering to senior citizens at the care center.

At school, he has also demonstrated leadership skills through his presidency in the A Cappella choir and vice president in Symphonic Band. In his four years at SMHS he has received Superior ratings in choir, bell choir and was recognized as part of the Minnesota All State Choir. This honoree also received the Most Improved award in baseball and Most Valuable in wrestling. Not above doing manual work, such as washing dishes at Camp Shamineau, he has a dream of possibly becoming a dentist. He has a Presidential Scholarship to Northwestern.

MARY BETH HOYT, daughter of Corliss Carter and Jim Hoyt, is also not afraid to wash dishes or being a nanny during her summer vacations. Other activities involving children includes teaching Sunday School, a volunteer leader for Vacation Bible School and confirmation teacher. She has been a Student Council member for four years, a peer leader in Target Beyond and this year she is a yearbook editor. Whether on the volleyball court, singing in A Cappella choir or being part of the SMHS speech team, this honoree will bring special style to our National Honor Society. Children will play a part in her future as she plans to be a child psychologist.

ABBIE BECKER, daughter of Scott and Sheila Becker, is unsure of where she wants to attend college. She is not afraid of hard work or doing jobs that very seldom receive praise. You can find her, right beside her mother, cleaning her church or saying "Have a Nice Day!" This inductee was a three year member of the volleyball team, a four year member of the A Cappella choir and also has had a part in past musicals and this year was part of the fall play. Additional activities in her church include Bible School at Sacred Heart, helping with their fall dinner, teaching religion classes and collecting for the food shelf.

His favorite sports are baseball and wrestling. In the arts he has been a member of Jazz Band, Pep Band, Symphonic Band, A Cappella choir and the Staples Area Men's Chorus. His leadership skills have been demonstrated not only in FFA, but at church retreats he takes the role as a small group leader. He has helped with the Ducks Unlimited Banquet, done service work on a project in New York and New Orleans, helping with the wrestling banquet and working at the lutefisk supper. He has worked at Gold's Turkey Farm, Hellings Food Pride, Dan Rose's Ranch and Haglin Construction. His future plans include enlisting in the United States Marines or learning Business Management at a college of his choice.

KAYLEE MARTIN, daughter of Mike and Mary Martin, someday may have her own show on the Home and Garden channel using her interior decorating skills. She also loves to dance and for the last four years has been an assistant dance instructor. Her community involvement includes collecting food for the food shelf, helping with vacation Bible school and donating blood, to planting flowers at LHS Care Center. Kaylee has been a member of Concert Choir, Concert Band, Pep band, A Cappella Choir and a part of high school musicals. She has held offices of vice president and president in her church youth group.

ASHLEY LISSON, daughter of Don and Judy Lisson, is competitive. She has lettered in tennis, basketball and track. She has played in state tennis and track tournaments and in basketball she is team captain. Her track career includes breaking two school records. Ashley has also worked on the yearbook. She was a class officer and homecoming candidate. As a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church she served at the church's fall dinner and carnival. She has worked as a babysitter, an instructor for Pee Wee tennis, youth basketball and at Don's Processing and last summer was an intern at Lakewood Health System Summer Internship Program. Upon graduation from college Ashley plans to be a licensed radiologist.

KELLY REESE, daughter of John and Barb Reese, has not decided on her future plans. She has been involved in working for her township, teaching religion, working with Bible school or practicing as part of the church Youth Praise Band. All four years of high school she has also been a church youth volunteer. In her junior and senior year she served as a class director. In 10th grade she worked as a Youth Frontiers leader and Peer Helper, high school choir, Madrigal Dinner, volleyball and track and was Homecoming Queen.

RYAN DETLOFF, son of Jerry and Lois Detloff, for the past four years has been actively involved in the Relay for Life, president of the 4-H club, treasurer in 11th grade and involvement with 4H community pride projects, football or wrestling, A Cappella Choir, Symphonic Band and Jazz Band. He was all conference in wrestling and MVP in football. As part of the Fish and Wildlife team he was part of the FFA state convention. Honor roll, church teen leader and a leadership member for Cardinal Pride Day. He has worked at the Moto City Raceway, helped neighbors with construction projects and worked on the family farm.

LONNA DUMPPROPE daughter of Lonny and Cathi Dumpprope, is a busy person. She is active in her church as part of youth group, Praise Band, Bible study and Vacation Bible School. Her church activities have also given her leadership skills as a VBS crew leader, a preschool and music leader. She was the fundraising chairman for the Spanish club, a three sport athlete participating in volleyball, softball and basketball. She has been a part of Concert Choir, A Cappella Choir, orchestra and Bell Choir. She received Superior ratings for her solos at sections and state music contests. She participates in the Staples Area Woman's Chorus and at a job in Motley. Next year she will be at Northwestern or St. Scholastica, pursuing her dream of majoring in Youth or Biblical Studies. She is also hoping to work her love of music into her future plans.

SKYE COUGHLIN, the daughter of Kevin and Kelly Coughlin, has made travel a part of her four years in high school. Whether it is state tournaments or mission trips to New York, or Medora, North Dakota, her suitcase has seen some miles. She is a tennis player, making All Conference four years, section runner up and third in state tennis this year. Her other activities include A Cappella Choir, grant writing for the Global Outreach and Learning club. She volunteered as a student leader for the Youth Frontiers program. She plans on studing pre-med in college majoring in psychology in medical school and eventually open her own practice. .

CELESTE HARLOW, daughter of David and Debra Harlow, hopes to one day work in an International Justice organization. She plans to major in communications and reconciliation (Social Justice) in college and hopes to work for a non-profit group. Ultimately, she wants God's will to be done in her life. Church activities play a big part in her life; she has been part of the Worship team, youth group, church choir and children's church helper. Some of her volunteer work has included working at a soup kitchen and being part of a Walk-a-Thon to raise money for a food shelf, as a junior counselor at Lake Beauty Bible Camp and part of middle school and fall play productions. Her other accomplishments include A Cappella choir, Polka Band, student council, Target Beyond, GOL, Bell Choir and Speech.

JUNIORS

RYAN BART, the son of Roman and Karen Bart, has been active in FFA. Since ninth grade he has competed in Nursery/ Landscaping and Forestry competition. Also held FFA office positions and participated in the talent competition for FFA. Music also factors highly into his life. He is part of Staples Motley orchestra playing violin and mandolin. He has used his skills as a mandolin player and taught younger kids to play this instrument, played for weddings and various other community events. As part of the Sacred Heart congregation he has been part of the Praise Band, aided with communion and worship services. He is often found working as a farm hand for elderly neighbors, water testing and antibiotic studies on Organic Vegetables at Central Lakes Ag. His dream job would be a technician working for the Department of Agriculture studying ways to improve farming.

ABBY SMITH, the daughter of Greg and Becky Smith, plans to graduate from college with a degree in one of the fields of medicine. She currently works as a cashier at a local grocery store and mowing lawns in the summer. She sings in her church choir, serving for mass, playing drums with Praise Band, working with religion class students. Abby is a three sport athlete volleyball, basketball and track, where she holds the triple jump record. She is also part of A Cappella choir, Symphonic Band and Bell Choir. She is a member of Target Beyond and student council.

ALEK PASKEWITZ, the son of Lee and Laurie Paskewitz. Alek belongs to a very prestigious organization called American Mensa; for those individuals who have scored in the top two percent of standardized, supervised tests. There are groups all over the world. He works on his family's farm doing various field work, has been active in 4-H, received awards working with Holstein cows and was part of a Junior Champion Dairy Exhibitors team. His church youth group is a big part of his life. He is a member of Symphonic Band and plays in the Pep Band and performs with the Central Minnesota Percussion Ensemble, Bell Choir and Jazz Band. He has been part of speech, Knowledge Bowl, fall play and the SMHS baseball team.

KATIE STONE, daughter of Chris and Kathy Stone, will sign up for any activity offered. Her list of activities include: Student council, Target Beyond, FCA, ENABL, GOL, HOSA, Yearbook and Junior Class director. She works as a lifeguard, is on the Stomping Grounds board of directors, volunteers at the LHS Care Center and is a member of the Staples Initiative Board and Dollars for Scholars. She is active in her church with missions trips to Panama, Mexico and Wyoming. Her additional involvement includes tennis, track, speech, orchestra, fall play and music tour. Her dream is being a doctor in a third world country.

SKYLER SVENDSEN, the son of Peter and Amy Svendsen, is considering going to seminary or

becoming a psychiatrist

but in his own words, "whatever God wants for

him, will be perfect." He is active in high school music including Concert Choir and Concert Band, A Cappella Choir and Symphonic Band. He has received superior and excellent rating at section music contests. He was a cast member in fall play of Target Beyond, student council and a junior class director. He also has spent summers working as a cashier, customer service and taking inventory.

PHILIP SMITHLEY, son of Jeff and Kelly Smithley, is another student who finds ways to serve and make a difference in peoples' lives. He is active in student council, Dollars for Scholars, FCA, ENABL, Peer Helper, fall play and Madrigal. He loves music and is part of Jazz Band, Pep Band, Polka Band, A Cappella Choir, orchestra, Staples Community Band and Percussion Ensemble. He has worked as car detailing at various jobs and the Stomping Grounds. His participation in church activities is important to Philip and include altar boy, Eucharistic minister, church youth volunteer, teaching religious education, being in Youth Praise Band and the NET Retreat for Catholic Youth.
