The Brass Ensemble, under the direction of Jeff Iverson; and the Staples Motley High School Choir, led by Steve Hoemberg, invited the public to join in the singing of the National Anthem at the Veteran's Day program at SMHS Nov. 11. Other events on the program included posting of the colors by the Motley American Legion Post #124; introductory remarks by Hoemberg; student speeches (read by speech teacher Bob Shaffer); the Pledge of Allegiance led by Connie Hoffert; a performance by the high school orchestra; staff speeches by Gloria Palmer and Kerry Lindgren; veteran speakers Hap Corbett (Korean War) and Wayne Mensen (Iraqi Freedom vet); a moment of silence followed by 'Taps;' and a gathering in the cafeteria at the close of the ceremony. A large Wing River Township dairy operation, in the midst of a major transition effort, had several large barns either destroyed or damaged by a fire Thursday, Nov. 12. Jerry Konen, 1958 graduate of Motley High School, was in attendance at the Veteran's Day program held at the middle school in Motley Nov. 11. Konen, who now lives in Garrison, was a member of the U.S. Air Force for 20 years and served in Vietnam for one year in 1966. He is also the Ex-Commander for the 6th District. More...

Alvin “Ian” Macheel, 63, of Motley Nov. 16, 2009 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services are Friday, Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. at the Motley United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5-7 at the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Motley Public Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples. Ian was born Jan. 2, 1946 in Oadby England, to Alvin and Georgina (Ward) Macheel. He grew up in the Motley area and graduated from Motley High School in 1964. He attended machinist training at that Staples Vo-Tec, graduating in 1966. On March 11, 1967 Ian married Marie Engstrom, at the Motley Methodist Church. He worked for 3M in Staples as a machinist until he retired in 2002. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, wintering in Arizona, hiking in the mountains, flower gardening, golf and carving diamond willow walking sticks and canes. He was a member of the church building committee and the church Men’s club. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Mano Amiga – a Mexican Missions group, and the Motley Fire Department for 22 years. Ian is survived by his wife; one daughter, Melissa of Minneapolis; one son, Jason of Motley; one grandson, his mother, two sisters, Frances (Bill) Kokett of Motley; Pauline (Robert) Dukawitz of Nikiski, Alaska; two brothers, Jim Macheel of Audubon; Dennis (Cindy) Macheel of Detroit Lakes; mother-in-law, Marian Engstrom; two sisters-in-law, Margie (Steve) Solem and Molly (Randy) Skeesick; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and father-in-law. More...
