Marian Carroll
Marian (Martin) Carroll, 68, died Oct. 27, 2009 at her home in Akeley after a prolonged illness.
A memorial service was held Nov. 1, at 2 p.m., at the VFW, Akeley. Burial was in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples.
Arrangements were with the Northern Peace Funeral Home of Walker.
Marian was born in Staples, June 15, 1941, to Ellsworth and Irene (Beaver) Martin the eldest of six children. She grew up in Staples and was a 1959 graduate of Staples High School. She was active in musicals and drama and
played Annie in the Staples
all school production of "Annie Get Your Gun." She
attended Concordia Summer Theatre in Moorhead. She continued to sing in different clubs around the Twin Cities.
Marian enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1963 and received her recruit training at the U.S. Naval Training Center in Bainbridge, Maryland. She received further training at Hospital Corps School at Great Lakes, Ill. and served as a Medical Corps Wave in Bremerton, Wash. She met and married U.S. Naval Missileman-Gunnersmate Billy Ray Thompson. She attended nursing school and received an LPN degree.
On July 20, 1985, Marian married Charles Emmett Carroll in El Cajon, Calif. In 1990, they moved to Minnesota and settled on the 11th Crow Wing Lake in Akeley where they lived until her death. She enjoyed the lake, boating, walleye fishing with friends and community events.
She was active in the Auxiliary of the Harold Harris VFW Post 8508, Akeley.
Marian is survived by her husband Chuck, one daughter, Tamara Ann (Jeffrey Bruce) Miller; one grandson; two greatgranddaughters; four sisters, Mugs (Ed) Mancuso, Big Lake; Kitt (Bob) Carroll, Tulsa, Okla.; Margo (Steven, Sr.) Hoemberg, Staples; Marjean (Howard) Meyer, S.C.; one brother, Bill Martin, Fargo, N.D.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by one son, Billy Ray Thompson, Jr. who died in 1994 at age 29; her parents and one niece, Lena Glorene Erbe.
