Steam engine and train expected next Tuesday
The Southern Pacific "Daylight" No. 4449 historic
steam engine is expected to pass through Staples next Tuesday, Oct. 13.
This is the same train and vintage passenger cars that stopped at the Staples Depot for servicing on July 9 on its way to the 2009 Train Festival in Owosso, Mich.
The engine is returning to its home in Portland, Ore., pulling several vintage passenger cars, including the New York Central #3 built for Harold Vanderbilt.
The train is expected to leave Harrison Street Station in Minneapolis at about 8 a.m. Tuesday. That would put it through Staples approximately 10:30 a.m. Arrival in Fargo, N. Dak., is expected by mid to late afternoon.
The rest of the schedule shows the train traveling from Fargo to Minot on Oct. 14, with a day off on Oct. 15. On Oct. 16, it will go from Minot to Harve, Mont., then to Whitefish, Mont., on Oct. 17. Another day off is scheduled for Oct. 18 before they leave Whitefish for Spokane, Wash., on Oct. 19 and then on into Portland on the Oct. 20.
More information on the engine, the cars and the schedule can be found at www.sp4449.com. Once the trip begins the site will include real time progress.
