Roger M. Lucy, 92, of Sauk Rapids, formerly of Blackduck, died Sept. 8, 2009 at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud.
Funeral services are Sept. 17, at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Blackduck, with the Rev. Dan Heath officiating. Visitation are one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Lakeview Cemetery in Blackduck.
Roger was born Oct.25, 1916 to Michael and Mary (Loomis) Lucy in Missouri Valley, Iowa. He graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1935. He married Marguerite Lucy on July 1, 1938 in Papillion, Nebraska; They lived in Papillion, Neb., Chicago, IIll., Missouri Valley, Iowa, Aitkin, Delano, Lincoln, Neb., and Blackduck,. He worked on the Chicago Railroad from 1937-1938; Manager of C. Thomas Store of Princeton, from 1938-1939; Burlington Railroad in Nebraska from 1943-1945; Iron Range Railroad (Mesabi) in 1946; L.B. Hartz Store in Blackduck, as a meat cutter from 1948-1981, when he retired. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Blackduck.
He enjoyed music, camping, traveling and his Irish heritage he returned to in 2006, when he traveled to Ireland. During World War II, he worked on the Alcan or Alaskan highway – a project that was vital to our country’s security.
He loved to laugh and watch old “Laurel & Hardy” movies.
He served on the Blackduck School Board for three years, and 29 years as Hornet Township Fire Warden.
He is survived by four daughters, Patricia Good, Independence, Mo.; Suzanne (Jim) Howlett, Independence, Mo.; Laura (Mike) Smith, Anchorage, Alaska; Monica (Brian) Houglum, Grand Marais; three sons, Michael (Marlys) Lucy, Fergus Falls; Tom Lucy, Blackduck; Ken (Laurie) Lucy, Sartell; 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one brother-in-law, Harlan Lewis; one sister-in-law, Virginia ( Ray) Rourk.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three brothers, Fredrick, Charles, William; three sisters, Helen, Hazel, and Laura.
