Cardinal girls tennis has busy week, good results

2009-09-03 / Sports

The Staples Motley girls tennis team last week had one of its busiest weeks of the year, competing in three meets and hosting one of them.

On the way home from Madison, Wisc. on August 24, the girls stopped in Pine City for their annual Power Invitational. The Cards, perhaps more than a little tired from their five day- four night journey to the Madison meet, tied with Blake School for third place.

The Pine City meet ann ually features compe- tition against the state's top ranked teams.

Coughlin noted the Cards finished tied with an up and coming Blake School, just behind top-seeded Mounds Park Academy, and ahead of 11- time champion Rochester Lourdes.

"Like always, playing at Pine City against these teams is a nice measuring stick this early in the season."

The first doubles team of Emma Koskiniemi and Caitlin Robinson took first place with three victories. They defeated doubles teams from Rochester Lourdes, Blake and Mound Park Academy to claim their trophy. Also getting three wins and a division title was eighth grader Mikayla Wing at fourth singles.

They finished in sixth place, just ahead of co-host Wadena-Deer Creek.

The first doubles team of Savanna Hill and Kelly Hagenson finished second for the Cards. "Kelly and Savanna were defeated in a tight final showdown after two impressive wins at one doubles," Coughlin said.

The team competition was close with Stewartville sneaking past Osakis by one point for the team title. The Cards ended 13 points behind the champs, in sixth place.

The girls traveled south to play the Delano-Buffalo invitational August 27, with SM taking sixth place.

Best individual finishes for the Cards included a first place for the first doubles team of Skye Coughlin and Emma Koskiniemi, who defeated teams from Brainerd, Delano and Maple Grove.

"Abby and Mikayla Wing fought their way into the final, but came up short in their last contest. "It's evident that Abby's game is coming, but not quite there yet to knock out what she

can do."

Coughlin also noted "Caitlin Robinson and Ashley

Lisson rebounded from a first round loss to capture the consolation with rock and roll doubles at two. When they got it going, they really impressed opponents and spectators with aggressive play."

The pace hardly lets up this week with the racquet ladies having three meets on their schedule from Sept. 3 to Sept. 10.
