I second the motion
Attention, Mr. Hap Corbett.
I read your letter last week in which you said you wrote all eight Minnesota Congressman and both U.S. Senators suggesting they create a law stating: "Be it resolved that no amendment may be added to any bill unless it pertains to the main subject of the bill". That statement reads like a poem.
I wrote a similar letter (fairly) recently trying to make the same point. It was in response to an attempt to attach an anti gun measure to a defense spending bill. The amendment failed but this kind of "parasite politics", as I call it, is so common it's pathetic. This truly is a bipartisan issue. All sides are sinfully guilty of this practice. If we tried to do something like that in the real world we would be in court facing a list of charges including extortion.
Our politicians (both at the state and federal level) should know better, but I think they are so used to having few people pay attention to what they are doing that they feel like it is "business as usual". We need to pay more attention, take a little initiative and I thank people like Hap Corbett for doing so.
I would also encourage everyone out there to contact their representatives with Hap Corbett's suggestion. This would greatly reduce wasteful spending and make the legislative process more efficient. (Ugh. I hope I don't sound like a "community organizer".)
But I do think it would really benefit each and every one of us greatly to follow Mr. Corbett's example on this one. Therefore in response to Hap Corbett's letter, I "second the motion".
