New principal welcomed, preparations made for building maintenance levy
Summer weather has finally decided to come to our area this month. The Staples Com- munity Center and schools' practice fields seem to be in constant use by students. It is always great to see such a good turn- out for all the summer Community Education programs. From all the smiles, the children are having a great time.
At the June meeting, I am pleased to announce the school board approved the appointment of Jason Luksik to principal for Motley and Staples Elementary schools. Jason began as principal on July 1 and I look forward to having him as part of our leadership team. Jason replaced Gwynne Gildow following her retirement at the end of June. Needless to say, Gwynne will certainly be missed for her experience and cheerful presence. Enjoy your retirement, Gwynne - you deserve it.
Even this early into the summer, we are focused on getting ready for Sept. 8. It will be the first day of school for kindergarten through ninth grades along with being the date selected for the Building Maintenance Levy vote. This will be an important vote for our schools and we will be working to provide the public with as much information as possible about the purpose of the funds we are requesting. Any comments or questions concerning the levy can be directed to the District Office at 218-894 2430.
The majority of funds from this levy will go directly to key maintenance items for our district's buildings. The largest portion of the funds will be used to replace building roofs where needed. For many years our building maintenance team has worked to patch our existing roofs. Unfortunately patching is not a permanent fix and needs to be continually updated. Money spent on short term repairs takes money away from other maintenance and classroom needs. In a building's life, it is important to replace a roof for longevity, especially when patching is no longer feasible or the best option going forward.
For example, this past school year, we had leaking in every one of our school buildings due to roofing issues. We were able to make repairs and do patch work but it is important to make more permanent replacements in order to avoid more costly repairs in future years. If we are good stewards to our existing buildings and make decisions today to make necessary updates, our communities will be able to use and enjoy our schools for generations into the future.
